              Saddle Flocking For English Saddles

_Saddle flocking and saddle fitting are two distinct but related items riders must consider with respect to the overall safety and fit of their saddle.  A properly flocked (stuffed) saddle is just as much of a necessity as a properly fitting saddle.  Back pain, leg pain, tight muscles, muscles spams and even lameness can occur due to an improperly flocked saddle.   Riders can also experience similar pain from an improperly flocked saddle.

              What is Saddle Flocking?

_Saddle flocking refers to the wool material that is placed inside the panel of your saddle.  The panels are labeled in the picture to the right.

______The quality of the material used to flock or reflock a saddle is very important.  We use only high quality, 100% natural wool to reflock saddles.  Unfortunately, there are saddle reflockers and saddle manufacturers that use old carpet fibers, wood chips and other inappropriate materials.  We have even found parts of used matches inside saddle panels!  This can prove to be dangerous and painful for both horse and rider.

_What is Saddle Reflocking, and How Do I Know If My Saddle Needs To Be Reflocked?

__Saddle reflocking is the process by which the old material in the saddle panels is removed and new wool is placed inside the panels.  It is very important that this is done in a skilled manner so that the reflocked panels are symmetrical and not too hard or too soft.

All saddles that are flocked (stuffed) with wool will eventually need to be reflocked.   An improperly flocked saddle can cause the same kind of pain and damage to your horse as an improperly fitting saddle.

Key signs that your saddle may need to be reflocked include:

              • Panels feel hard or lumpy
              • Panels are asymmetrical meaning each panel is a different shape
              • "Holes" in the flocking can be felt when running your hands down the panel
              • The flocking has "thinned out" or flattened out

Key Questions To Ask Prior To Having Your Saddle Reflocked

Here are some key questions to ask prior to having your saddle reflocked:
              • What is the level of experience of the saddle reflocker, and where did they get their training?
              • What material will be utilized to do the reflocking?
              • Will the old material in the panels be removed and new wool placed in the panel or will new material be added to the existing old material?
              • How long will it take to get your saddle back?
              • Is there any type of warranty offered for the reflocking?
              • Is a saddle flocking recheck included in the price?
              • Will you receive a written price quote and receipt for your saddle?
              • Is the person doing the reflocking insured?
              • What is the cost?
